The following are a few places to shop for food in and around our area. For everyday items, try SUPER SHOP AND STOP (in Port Chester on the ground level of the AMC Movie Theatre plaza), WHOLE FOODS or COSTCO WHOLESALE in Port Chester, the warehouse store that requires an annual membership).
RYE FARMERS MARKET- Sundays, June to November, 8:30am-2:00pm Rain or Shine- In Parking Lot 2 on Theodore Fremd Ave., behind the Purchase Street stores.This is a great open air market for vegetables, fruit, herbs, dairy products, plants, baked goods and even prepared and specialty foods, all sold by local farmers and businesses. JERRY’S POST ROAD MARKET- 1000 Boston Post Road, Rye- This convenience store and deli is open 7 days a week 6 am- 10pm. Known for its excellent Irish and English food section of sausages, bacon, sweets, tea and more, you can get almost everything else here too; they have out of town newspapers on Sundays, freshly made smoothies and salads, a wonderful deli and a famous Irish soda bread. They are an affordable catering option, as well.
RYE COUNTRY STORE- 41 Purchase St., Rye- This store sells great prepared meals for those nights when you need a little help, and their baked goods are wonderful. They also offer specialty cheese and a small selection of lovely produce, along with a wide array of gift items for the home. Known for their party platters and gift baskets, they will cater casual and formal meals for any size crowd on short notice.
CORNERSTONE CATERERS- 544 Milton Rd., Rye- Along with offering the catering services their name advertises, Cornerstone is a great spot to pop into for sandwiches or to pick up some of their amazing chicken nuggets for the kids. Their cookies, soups and guacamole are wonderful.
JUNE AND HO – 70 Purchase St., Rye- A fantastic specialty store that carries a good variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, wonderful cheeses, pates, freshly baked breads, some dairy products, etc. It has a good selection of prepared foods for quick dinners, delicious soups and sandwiches and even some desserts. They also carry a selection of beautiful fresh flowers. Can be somewhat pricey, but usually it’s worth it!
CRISFIELD’S MEATS- 61 Purchase St., Rye – you enter through the parking lot behind Purchase St. This is a butcher store with great meats, again rather expensive, but often worth it. This is also a good place for take-out sandwiches, and some prepared items such as chicken, which make a quick, tasty dinner.
PATISSERIE SALZBURG of RYE- 77 Purchase St., Rye- This place is wonderful for anyone who loves desserts. Whether you need to pick up a dessert for your family, or for a very special occasion you cannot go wrong here. It is also a great place to meet for a coffee or tea. Try the flax fruit muffins (heavenly!), quiche, sandwiches and salads.
CCG PATISSERIE – 247 Halstead Ave., Harrison- Like Patisserie Salzburg, offering a wonderful selection of cakes, cookies, croissants and danishes. A bit more out of the way if you live in Rye, but definitely worth trying!
THE KNEADED BREAD – You MUST make a trip to The Kneaded Bread, 181 N. Main St., Port Chester. A huge selection of breads, too numerous to list, all baked on the premises. They also make delicious take-out soups and sandwiches.
PORT CHESTER SEAFOOD - 295 Midland Ave., Port Chester (near the Home Depot) and LOBSTER BIN at 2004 Field Point Rd. at Railroad Ave in Greenwich are two fish stores which both carry a wonderful selection of fresh fish. In each store the staff are most helpful; they will even cook your lobsters for you, or clean your shrimp if you ask for a very small charge. Port Chester Seafood will deliver for free.
EBB TIDE SEAFOOD- 1 Willet Ave., Port Chester- You can stay and eat your seafood on the deck outside or buy fresh lobsters, clams, crab and all kinds of fish to take home and prepare yourself. It feels like it just came off the boat at this dockside setting.
APPLE FARM- 262 Boston Post Rd., Port Chester - It's in the shopping plaza right across from the Kohl's plaza. They have very good fruit and vegetables at excellent prices.
LORD’S FARM-1120 E. Boston Post Rd. heading towards Mamaroneck- A fairly good selection of fruits and vegetables, but also a good place to buy olives and cheeses, jams and jellies, and a number of last minute basics.
TRADER JOE’S- 1260 E. Boston Post Rd. heading towards Larchmont- A slightly different grocery store with amazingly low prices and interesting foods, some imported and organic. Their house brands are very popular.
STEW LEONARD’S- 1 Stew Leonard’s Dr., Yonkers and 100 Westport Ave, Norwalk- This “Disneyland of Dairy Stores” is an enormous dairy that also sells meats, fish, produce, bakery, cheese and wine, all chosen specifically for their freshness, quality and value. The stores have petting and feeding zoos and animatronics to entertain kids and parents. The birthday cakes are known to be excellent.
MERCURIO FRESH PASTA AND PREPARED FOODS- 363 Mamaroneck Ave., Mamaroneck- A great selection of fresh pastas and many of the sauces that go with them. They also carry prepared lasagnas, meats and other casseroles. Worth a trip to the Main Street in Mamaroneck, besides you can stop at SAL’S for a piece of great pizza…
WHOLE FOODS - PORT CHESTER or 100 Bloomingdale Rd., White Plains and 90 E. Putman Ave, Greenwich- carries a huge selection of organic fruit and vegetables. Actually the whole store boasts organic products. This is a good spot for dairy products and meats. The one in White Plains has a large selection of ready-made foods, and is a great place to pick up dinner made with healthy products.
